Getting the most out of a session

Here are some tips to help your group get the most out of each study session:

·         Decide what you are going to do in advance

·         Prepare for the session, so you can make the most of your time together

·         Take turn teaching, to reinforce your knowledge.

·         Stick to the session topic.

By supplementing your individual study with a group, you can reinforce what you have learned, deepen your understanding of complex concepts, and maybe even make a few new friends. Remember that a friend is a person who encourages you to do your best and achieve on a high level, one who pushes for you to try a little harder and be a little better. If someone pulls you down the wrong trails of life, then those people are not your friends, (they are actually your enemies), and you must avoid them at all costs. Whoever said learning can’t be fun? Learning is enjoyable and exciting when you study with others.

Working together helps everyone

You may have noticed that when you’re explaining something you’ve learned to a friend, you begin to understand it better yourself. This happens because, when you explain an idea, you need to think more deeply about it.

The same principle makes study groups useful. Studying with others in a small group is helpful because you:

·         Think out loud

·         Share ideas

·         Learn from one another

In an effective study group, you and other students hash out lesson materials together – explaining concepts, arguing about them, figuring out why one person’s answer differs from anothers – and in the process you most likely learn more than you would have.

The benefits of study groups

Group study offers other advantages in addition to gaining a deeper understanding of class material. These include the opportunity to: Reinforce note-taking.  If your AP biology notes are unclear, you can ask a member of your study group to help you fill the gaps. Share talents. Each person brings different strengths, such as organizational skills, the ability to stick to a task or capacity for memorization.

Cover more ground. Group members may be able to solve a calculus problem together that none would have solved alone. Benefit from a support system. Members often have common goals, such as good grades. Each person’s work affects the other members, which will result of making members supportive of one another. Socialize. It is more fun to study with others; the give and take makes it more interesting. And because it’s more fun, you spend more time studying!

Summary

In a cross country race between two teams a remarkable act of righteousness happened. The first and second place runners were Dep and Jenna respectably. Dep held on to the first place spot for almost all the race. Then in the last 100 yards she popped the growth hip bone. She immediately stopped running because of the pain. Jenna who admitted that throughout the race was never able to pass her saw this and stopped. Instead of using this opportunity to pass Dep and win she stopped and helped Dep to the finish line where she gave Dep a slight push ensuring she won.

Reflection

This act shows the great sportsmanship that Jenna Huff has. I believe that more people should learn from her example. It is not whether you win or lose but how you do it. This act of kindness formed a great trust between the two.

“Loyalty”

Two girl softball teams were playing against each other when the batter Sarah, a senior, scored her first home run. The crowd cheered. That is until they noticed that Sarah was unable to complete the home run because she had injured her knee on first base. Her team was not allowed to substitute someone with her. Then a miraculous display of sportsmanship took place. Two girls, Mallory and Liz, who were from the opposite team, picked up Sarah and got her to each of the bases until she completed a home run.

This is one of the greatest displays of sportsmanship I have seen. There needs to be more of these types of people among athletes. Even if you are on the opposite team you should still respect the other team.

Reflection.

 There is only so much that someone can accomplish when they try to do everything by themselves. In order to achieve the maximum results working together is a must. In a discussion to solve a problem one person might be extremely knowledgeable and might be able to think up a good solution. However chances are that if other people also take part in this creation of a solution, then the overall result will be better. This is because people are different, and it is their different way of thinking that allows for two people with a different mindset to create the best possible solution. Learn to work together and your chances of success will increase.

Habit 6: Synergize

Synergy is achieved when two or more people work together to create something better than they could alone. Through this habit, teens learn it doesn't have to be “your way” or “my way” but rather a better way, a higher way. Synergy allows teen to value differences and to better appreciate others. Synergy is the reward. The delicious fruit you will taste as you get better at living the other habits, especially at thinking win-win and seeking first to understand. Learning to synergize is like learning to form v formations with others instead of trying to fly through life solo. You’ll be amazed at how much faster and farther you’ll go. Synergy doesn't just happen. It’s a process. You have to get there. And the foundation of getting there is: Learn to celebrate differences.

A good band is a great example of synergy. It’s not just the drums, or the guitar, or the sax, or the vocalist, its all of them together that make up the “sound”. Each band member brings his or her own strengths to the table to create something better than they each could alone. No instrument is more important than another, just different.

Work Together. There are a number of ways that you can ensure you get the most out of your educational experience. First, participate fully. Engage regularly in the discussions and be willing to share your personal experiences. You can get to know your classmates through the dialogue that is created in a course environment – sometimes even better than in face to face class. And the same goes for your instructor. Be sure to contact your professor – especially if you are having problems. He/she is still your instructor and will be there to guide and assist you as needed

What Joseph smith is trying to make people comprehend is that they should do what is right. It could be anything and everything from recycling to making a community meeting to discuss problems and ways to improve them. Crime is never a good thing; we must strive for improvement, compassion, and righteousness while eliminating the influence of that which is sinful and wrong.

3. … ask questions. Successful students ask questions to provide the quickest route between ignorance and knowledge. In addition to securing knowledge you seek, asking questions has a least two other important benefits. The process helps you pay attention to your professor and it helps your professor pay attention to you. Think about it. If you want something go after it. Get the answer now, or fail a question later. There are no foolish questions, only foolish silence. It is your choice.

4. … Learn that a student and a professor make a team. Most instructors want exactly what you want: they would like for you to learn the material in their respective classes and earn a good grade.

Successful students reflect well on the efforts of any teacher; if you have learned the material, the instructor takes some justifiable pride in teaching. Join forces with your instructor they are not your enemy, you share the same interests, the same goals- in short, your teammates. Get to know your professor. You’re the most valuable players on the same team. Your jobs are to work together for mutual success. Neither wishes to chalk up a losing season. Be a team player!

Study for Multiple Exams

Part 2

My strategies for written assignments: Everyone has their own writing styles. I generally come up with an idea and do massive amounts of research before I ever think about writing. I then organize my research then sometimes prepare an outline before actually writing. I always print out the paper then come back to it the next day to re-read it. That is the easiest way for me to catch my own mistakes. I have to give my eyes a break from it, and if I just wrote it I think it looks perfect. But if I look at it a day later I almost always find grammatical error or phrases and sentences I just want to reword.

How I succeed in team projects: Never assume someone is doing what they are supposed to be doing. Have regular meetings and each member show their work, not just give you and the group their word for it.

Part 3

Here are my final words of wisdom or my students who want to get better grades in college. A big thing that not many will say is to ask for help if you need it. It’s not a bad thing not to understand, it’s a bad thing if you don’t do anything about it. Plan your time out so that you are completing everything that needs to get done and leave time to double check. Write things down and have good time management skills. Asking for help is probably the biggest thing I can say though. If you don’t understand, go to office hours or find a classmate that does understand and is willing to help you. If you try hard, it will come to you. I find myself thinking that I could have to try harder to fail than I try to succeed. It is something that is within me. If that’s not who you are, then hopefully things that I and others have done can help show you that success is something that is amazing to find! Good Luck!

Part 2

English, Math, Foreign language tips: For math, all I can say is do all the problems assigned. It is the only way to practice and that’s really all it is for math. It’s the same for chemistry, if you do practice problems you will be able to understand the material so much better because those subjects are just not memorization like history, you need to be able to apply what you have learned in practical situations. As for English, I am no longer taking it, but I would say to leave yourself plenty of time to write essays and papers. They take time to get all the information out of your head and into the page, so don’t leave them until the last second.

Work Together Part 1

I can and will work as part of the team as long as everyone in the team is willing to do work. I don’t like having to pick up slack, but I will if I know that my grade will be harmed otherwise. My greatest academic success was in my first semester when I had to write a 10-12 page research paper. It was the longest paper that I had ever been assigned and I was a little scared. Also, it was the first was the first paper where they just gave me the paper and told me to write about something. I had to argue in favor or against something, but it could be anything from the sky is blue to hypnotism. I wrote mine on hypnotism. I worked on this paper for weeks and weeks. Every night I would be doing research or writing, I put so much effort into this paper. It ended up being just under 12 pages but it was full on information. I turned it in and when I got it back a week or so later, I had received the first A+ of my college career. All my hard work paid off because I got the grade I deserve. I was really happy and proud of myself.
